The child who has felt a strong love for his surroundings and for all living creatures, who has discovered joy and enthusiasm in work, gives us reason to hope that humanity can develop in a new direction.
- Dr. Maria Montessori
Elementary
Montessori elementary provides a structured, child-centered, and developmental approach that honors each child as an individual within our broader community. Because we remain intentionally small and teacher-led, we have the flexibility to respond and adapt to our families. By nesting the school within our vibrant neighborhood, we ensure that learning does not stop at the school walls.

The Montessori elementary program provides rich interdisciplinary learning, as well as supported freedom of choice for children. Children with particular passions are encouraged to deepen their understanding, seek out resources, and take on large projects. We often describe Montessori elementary as "cosmic education": a wonder-based approach to the universe, our place within it, and our contributions to its vast diversity. We offer lessons in math, language, geometry, biology, geography and physical science, history, music, art, and handwork, working with children to build bridges between subjects and nuance understanding.

During the course of a typical day, children have two uninterrupted work periods. During these stretches of time, they receive short, hands-on lessons, practice their learning, and pursue purposeful projects. Guides work with children to support their freedom to choose focused work and to develop their capacity for self-initiation and persistence. They observe children, help children record what they have done, and meet with them one-on-one on a regular basis to review progress and set goals. Children thus experience freedom bounded by responsibility to the community and the state standards.
